No, Dr. Ytterbium didn't go crazy for good. (At least not yet...) This will all make sense later...
And her quip concerning the silly costumes is of course an intentional tit-for-tat response!
Though I doubt that in real life it would work the way Dexter describes it here... ;-)

PS: Kanny has a a small cameo in Eternity Complex... ;-)

To be fair, she's still literally wearing an old-fashioned trenchcoat with the collar popped herself. :P

The trenchcoats have different designs because I made up Sinistra's coat (and thus also Dexter's) just in the page before, while Ytterbium's is supposed to be the same as here... ;-)

Wait what?! But, the coin... This is one way to get in touch with someone (or something hmmm!).

Incidentally I do remember a few true stories about certain isolated lighthouses from back in the day which could only communicate with the mainland via message in a bottle. But come on Ytterbium, what's wrong with a phone call :O

Microraptor
Of course, doing a phone call prerequisites knowing the right phone number - or the receiver of the message having a phone in the first place.
The question here is though: How is tossing a message in the bottle into the water the better approach?? Isn't what Ytterbium does more or less the equivalent of dialing a random number? ;-)
(I suppose in your lighthouse example, there was probably a place at the coast were the water current usually directed the bottle to the right direction...)

Hmm... a ritual of some sort, perhaps? Or the way to contact her expert?

By the way, the thing about the costumes being the thing noticed so that descriptions are impossible: was that inspired by Will Eisner's The Spirit? He cites the same reason for wearing the domino mask...

One of your guesses goes into the right direction.... But which one? ;-)

And no, I didn't know that Eisner bet me to it concerning the "outrageous costume distracts observers" idea! (Well, there is nothing new under the sun, etc...)

"I'm contacting my expert, who, by the way, is a literal mermaid. This is how they communicate. Trust me on this."

If a mermaid were to find the bottle, she would probably just add it to her collection, putting it next to her dinglehopper...
