Hmmm... That thing looks oddly familiar, don't you think?

Recently you may have read about this other theft of an object in the Gernsbeck Museum for sinister occult purposes. But these two events are almost a century apart - it's not something that happens often...
And as we'll see, they also don't have much else in common either.

Cleo accessing a newspaper via the monitor in her handbag (actually her time travel device in disguise) is a homage to how Mr. Spock did the same with his tricorder in the classic Star Trek episode The City on the Edge of Forever.

For historical context: By 1926, the Nazi party already existed, but wasn't in power yet.

Pffft, Kanny shouldn't complain. She got my pretty-pretty canope replica for her collection.
PS: Poor-poor grandpa, Peter darling.

Exactly, Edgar Pech is the father of Dieter Pech and the grandpa of Peter Pech!!
(And the lesson of the day: It pays off to to read the whole newspaper article, and not just the headlines!) ;-)

didn't I see this plot on Tailspin?

As a kid, I loved TaleSpin, and I fully admit that there may be a lot of trope overlap regarding this and my stories.

However, I got the inspiration for doing this chapter rather spontaneously, when I randomly saw an add for this!
"Hmmm, Weimar Republic era Germany", I thought, "a very interesting setting!"

And the TV series Babylon Berlin proves so too, BTW.
Yes, apparently this kind of stories mainly seem to get set in Berlin specifically - but I chose Gernsbeck, since that's were I do all my world building! :-) And world building there will be, since there're still a few aces up my sleeve which I'll soon reveal...

Two other puzzle pieces in "mood picture":
- Metropolis (which got produced in this time & place)
- The 2013 adaption of The Great Gatsby
