I should perhaps add that I am of course aware of the fact that there are actually a lot of black opera singers (and even whole operas, like e.g. Porgy and Bess, which often get produced with a completely black cast.) But I guess that they are nevertheless in the minority, in comparison to white opera singers.
To be fair, his objection was because of stereotypes others may have in their heads. (As in: "They wouldn't believe that you are indeed an opera singer"...) Nevertheless, quite a can of worms to open, of course.
I'm just thinking of that Doctor Who episode when Martha asks if the people of the past aren't going to notice she's black, and the Doctor just says "act naturally and no one will pay attention" or something along the lines of "people are oblivious." I can't find the clip XD
I need to re-watch Doctor Who (uh...the newer series, since there's a billion episodes XD).
Edit:
Oh yeah! Khadija Mbowe has a gorgeous voice and was classically trained. They seem to mostly do YouTube videos, but I think they still sing and do a lot of work in the music community :3
I think the only female opera singer I know by name was Marylin Horne XD Clearly, I need to beef up my opera knowledge XD XD

Female opera singers I know by name: Anna Netrebko, Montserrat Caballé, and of course... Maria Callas!
