OK, I hope this part of the story doesn't come off as all too forced and constructed...
I had this idea to use the philosopher's stone for some clever trickery with density, volume and buoyancy... But when I examined the relevant formula (density=mass/volume), it turned out that the real life physics were against me in this case. So I had to add this weird mass-reducing extra ability to the stone to make it work...

If the barrels are sealed there is a good chance that they would float anyway.

You mean, because what counts in buoyancy is the volume of the displaced water, which is why a hollow object can float quite well, even if its material is of high density - the reason why we can build huge ships out of steel, after all. But this is of course negated if the water gets into the hollow space and fills it.

I have to confess that I didn't do any calculations. This means that while I hope that I got the physical principles about right, I currently have no clue if the math would indeed work out or not.
