The Elgin Marbles are marble sculptures that in the early 19th century where removed from the Parthenon in Greece by the Earl of Elgin (no, not that Elgin). They ended up in the British Museum, where they are to this day. This is seen as a notorious case of possible art theft - not just from the perspective of modern day ethics, but also because it's questionable if Elgin's permit he claimed to have from the Osman Empire was actually legit.
Being of partly non-European ancestry, Kanny is quite aware of such issues which are sorta related to colonialism. Furthermore she herself has a certain reputation to loose within the archeological community.
Also, I am sure that the real Greek ministry of culture is decidedly less laissez faire about giving out excavation permits to foreigners than I portrayed here. That's why Kanny thinks it's rather unusual after all. (And it has plot relevance of course!)
That panel with Wildebees as pilot kinda reminds me of Michelle Rodriguez' role in Avatar... She would also be a fitting actress for portraying Wildebees in live-action...
Last time I checked, the nation of Greece was so messed up that they'd probably be cool with any sort of excavation so long as those interested made sizable donations to their local/provincial/national "operations budgets".
Oh the terrifying gnu! Not really. I guess I was in a nervous mood the other day, because I wanted to read her name as "Wild bees", but wild bees aren't really all that scary either.
Well, for people who are allergic to bee stings, I'd guess bees are quite scary.
Also, there are the bee hybrids known as Africanized bees, which are notorious for their increased aggressiveness...
Also I hope that Tarik and Babette are having fun~!
("Try your luck"? Hmmm... Why would they say something like that...?)
Her name scares me, by the way.Her name is the Afrikaans word for... well, wildebeest. So, if one considers those animals scary...Oh the terrifying gnu! Not really.
