Man, I had this scene in my head at least since early September! I know that because I told lirvilas the tidbit about Wildebees that Lena is revealing here, shortly before Childhood's End went online.
(Only that in my original vision, it was Tarik instead of Kanny who is inadvertently tearing up that old wound. But hey, I had to shoehorn this into the plot somehow... Also, it now gives us the sweet irony of Lena calling Kanny insensitive!)

(BTW, unfortunately I have no idea how probable it would be in real life that an army lets you keep your dog tag after throwing you out...)

There's a lot of reasons a military might separate a service member. Not all of them are things to be ashamed of:

-Hardship (typically family issues)
-End of allowable time in service (in total, or at certain rank) as mandated by law
-Reduction in force (across the whole force, or within a specific military specialty)
-"Failure to adjust" (unlikely in this case!)
-Medical (possible--lingering issues from Ostrich war?)
...And that's just off the top of my head.

It's unclear if Selene Wildebees's strong emotional reaction is derived from shame or merely loss.

Edit: Yes, they'd most likely let her keep her tags. They're of no use to anyone else.

Double Edit: "Soldier" isn't a job like an accountant or a line cook. It's a lifestyle, it's a mindset, it's a moral code. IMHO Wildebees is a goddamn Soldier and Kanny should not have disrespected her like that.

Those are some interesting options.
Aside from the plain old disciplinary reason (either she genuinely screwed up big time, or everyone thought that she screwed up big time), my tendency would be most towards the medical one, tying into the other part of her backstory.

(End of allowable service though sounds too... "regular" in my opinion. It should rather be something that she couldn't see coming.)

Though I think what one can be sure of is: She didn't want to leave the army.

Edit: RE: "Soldier isn't a job like..." et cetera
Yep, and actually we'll get to that notion - eventually.

Omg Lena no!! (Nice details with the scratches on her arms btw... she's been through some TUSSLES)

She got these scars due a really unfortunate encounter with an... ostrich! (As already described here.)
You see, she is a veteran of the Ostrich War...

Oof oh no

Kanny accidentally found a very sore spot in Selene's psyche...

A soldier has heart as well! Hard to believe, but they do have.

They are human beings after all!
