Good question...
I'd say that it would be as easy or difficult as killing a horse with sidearms. (I mentioned in the ostriches' original "30 Days" entry that they are specifically bred for war, but that doesn't render them invulnerable.)
Plus, ostrich riding is also a thing that people actually do. (Makes me wonder if anyone somewhere in history actually half-seriously entertained the idea of using them as mounts in a war...)
Maybe the ostrich isn't an ostrich, but actually a species of terror bird revived by Ytterbium as a weapon for that nation in their war? Everyone just assumed they were large ostriches bred for war.
Man, I should put terror birds into the comic some time, that would be awesome...
While Dr. Ytterbium indeed hasdabbled ingenetic engineering (that facet of her rarely comes up nowadays), I never made the mental connection of her having anything to do with the Ostrich War.
But said war probably happened afterSelene's stint in Iraq (thus in the late 2000s or early 2010s) - which means that Ytterbium would not have been too young for this to be implausible...
BTW, since Selene's country of origin is vaguely hinted to be in Africa, I have also been wondering if Buranda may in some way have been involved in the Ostrich War. But alas, Selene's Afrikaans-related cultural background points to her country being more in the southern rather than the western part of the continent...
