Tarik is of Turkish descent and (like the majority of Turks) of Muslim background, though personally he is living a rather secular life.
Also, Tarik makes the point here that the modern day common usage of "Luddite" for people who are simply stubborn technophobes is a bit of a shift from the term's original meaning.
They say "write what you know", so I chickened out of making Tarik actually a practicing Muslim, and gave him my own secular outlook on the world instead...
