BTW, regarding Kanny being angry at someone while they are on a boat - incidentally that's also how the Cryptida story starts that is currently written by Jay042!
It runs in parallel to his current Kaza's Mate Gwenna story (see here for audience participation!), and those two plot lines are eventually supposed to crossover...

That's... a good question, actually...
Looking waaayyy back at the page where he first appears, Prof. Lidenbrock describes him as "our mechanic and general dogsbody". (So I guess TA may indeed be the most fitting official job description...)
Regarding the mechanics part, he got overshadowed by Clarissa since then.* But remember that the team got to know Clarissa over Peter in the first place, and also Clarissa and Peter were shown working on projects together...

* So much that even *I* forgot about that detail until looking it up again just now!
