Remember that Kanny compared those ditches to an irrigation system? ;-)

Also, can you guess what Lena is about to do next...?

Well, I came up with the gist of this chapter back when you were running the climax of Flyover Country - that definitely influenced my thought processes for this plot...

(Steve Rodgers voice) I get this reference!

Now I am not quite sure which reference you mean exactly...

Overall, I fear I may have underestimated how the referenced dragon blood story element from the Nibelungenlied being common knowledge might be a thing rather specific to German culture, and thus I may have left my international readers with more puzzled head-scratching than intended...

The bathing-in-dragon’s-blood-to-make-yourself-invincible bit. :p (And maybe also understand birds, or something? I can’t remember now.)
I know I’m a sample of one, but if it eases your mind, I’m not German and I still got (at least some of) it. :P

I think the "understanding birds" thing is not mentioned in the Nibelungenlied, but it's definitely in the story's version from the Edda, and Richard Wagner used that too in his opera. Oh, and Fritz Lang has both the bird and the bath!
(And I briefly acknowledge the bird thing in the dialogue.)
