The two women are Sören's mermaid daughter Sora and her mother Ulrika.
You may already know them from Kaza's Mate Gwenna, though Ulrika has appeared in Cryptida too.

And yes, a sailor and two mermaids are indeed spending their holiday in a landlocked and very mountainous country - maybe Sören is of the opinion that a vacation is all about experiencing something new and unfamiliar??

(And please give Tarik some slack for still not being used to Sören having a family - when the team met the mermaids of the Sisterhood for the first time, he wasn't there with them!)

And Soren's absence in a number of stories could be explained by him spending time with Ulrika and Sora

Who knows, they might at one point even have tried out that "Around the World in 80 Days" thing, Phileas Fogg Willy Fog-style! ;-D

Sören seems to earn better then I thought, if he can afford a holiday in that country...

Apart from Prof. Lidenbrock himself, Sören is quite probably the one who has worked the longest in the Cryptozoology Department, and thus may have climbed the salary ladder accordingly.
(Plus that means he had plenty of time for putting some money aside.)

And on the other end of things, if hotels / holiday homes / other kinds of guest rooms prove to be too expensive, he would be totally OK with camping.

It's actually unique & considered reasonable for mermaids to go sightseeing in landlocked countries after all they are marine creatures. So are Soren & Ulrika married?
Microraptor edit delete reply
Yup, the mermaids probably already know most of the ocean plus a lot of land near the shore!

Are Sören and Ulrika married though?
That's... a good question, actually.
While you can see Ulrika wearing a ring, it isn't a wedding ring. It's supposed to be this one, which Ulrika - look closely - also already had back in the flashback.
It's quite certainly a present from Sören though - maybe even an engagement ring.
So, long story short, I don't think they're married.
However, this might indeed be in the cards for some time in the future...
*writes down potential plot idea* :-)

My sympathies go out to Soren for yet another vacation interrupted by underlings

Sören is trying to set up a proper work-life balance here, and Tarik should better respect that!
