Bettina's adversary in this chapter, Virtual Julietta, is even conceptually a bit similar to VAL, in that she's an A.I. who took over a whole company.

A major difference is though that Virtual Julietta exists only as software and as avatar on a screen, and therefore desires to have body.

Hmmm, a body that an A.I. can use?
Where do we find that...? ;-D
